Bureau of Statistics (BOS) will be conducting the 2019/2020 Agricultural Census in October 2020. The Census is a complex, large-scale operation that is usually undertaken once in every decade. It is one of the largest statistical data collections undertaken by Bureau of Statistics.

The Bureau of Statistics therefore invites medically and physically fit citizens of Lesotho under the age of 50 years to apply for the following temporary positions tenable in the ten (10) Districts of Lesotho:

DURATION   : 150 DAYS

Job Summary

Under the supervision of marketing officer, the Assistant Marketing Officer is responsible for assisting in the commercialization of local production linking producers to efficient market and efficient allocations of resources in the productive sectors. It is meant to maximizes the contribution to the national objectives of poverty alleviation and employment creation. The Officer is also responsible for organizing or participating in training workshop for producers/entrepreneurs to interpret marketing information property.

Information Collection and Dissemination

• Collect and analyze information on the performance of various market
from the department staff, publications. International organization and
other Ministries of institutions to compile monthly and annual bulletins.
• Collect information on marketing trends, price changes, market
challenges and opportunity to develop media program lessons or
interview marketing staff and the private sector weekly on topical marketing issues or marketing developments.

Research and Developments

• Assist in market research to identify possible industry for exploitation
• Participate in developing enterprise budgets identified industries.
• Participate in promoting various business opportunities for exploitation
and investment.
• Maintains the marketing data bank for easy retrieval of information.

Marketing Extension
• Contact training workshops in collaboration with other marketing officers
to inform producers and traders on the implications of various market
developments or environment and interpret given information.
• Through fields visits and conducting interviews and or surveys evaluate
the marketing information system to en sure its effectiveness.
• Liaise and organize primary producers on information or materials to be
exhibited in local and international expositions
• May represent the department in var:ous endeavors and issues related to
marketing.

Other Relevant Knowledge and Skills: Computer Literacy
For Work of Others: The incumbent may supervise enumerators on ad hoc marketing studies

For Property: The job requires the incumbent’s overall responsibility to safeguard assets under their use such as computers. Vehicle, Office furniture and other office equipment.
For Effects of Errors: The incumbent has to check the data provided for errors so as not to mislead the Public and there is uncertainty on whether advice given to farmers on production and marketing planning would yield expected results.

For Safety of Others: This factor is minimal.
Complexity: The job requires statistical and business analysis proper interpretation of trade information, and appreciation of smallholder problems and good communication skills.
Authority for Decision-Making: The incumbent would need to initiate work programs, and seek approval from the marketing officer.
Problem Solving: The incumbent would need to solve marketing and business problems of producers and traders and may refer some to the marketing officer.
Supervision Received: The job requires the incumbent to work independently but expected to report to the Marketing Officer on weekly basis for guidance and approval of sectional works plans, reports, and budgets.
Contacts: the job requires seeking information from other ministries international organizations, producers and traders from within and outside the country.
Efforts: the job requires high mental effort when budgeting planning, solving problems and reviewing reports written by Marketing Assistant and Enumerators, making decisions in order to achieve organizational goal.
Physical Effort: will sometimes travel long distances by road or by foot to reach rural area

Emotional Effort: the job involves dealing mostly with producers and trader who may not be considerate in case of market failure i.e. when their product are not bought at the market. The incumbent will have to be tolerant when faced with such cases.

Working Condition
Unfavorable Working Conditions: The job may involve working overtime, exposure to cold winds in winter and unbearable heat in summer, some areas are inaccessible and this requires the incumbent to walk long distances.
Hazards: In cases where measures had to be taken against some members of the public in cases such as confiscation of property, some property owners may translate into bad personal relationships.
