Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified local candidates for the following positions tenable at the Senate Office. The closing date for the applications is 12th JUNE, 2026
Position Details
- Position Title: Assistant Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod
- Grade:

Job Summary
Under the general supervision of the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, the incumbent is responsible for maintaining order, enforcing protocol, and carrying out ceremonial duties within the Senate, while supporting the President of the Senate in administrative and security functions.
The Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in the Senate of Lesotho is responsible for ceremonial and administrative duties to support the functioning, security, and protocol of the Senate.
Key Responsibilities
1. Ceremonial Duties
- Act as the official ceremonial officer of the Senate
- Carry the Black Rod as a symbol of authority
- Escort the President of the Senate or other dignitaries during the State Opening of Parliament and other formal occasions
- Participate in official parliamentary ceremonies and traditions
2. Maintaining Order and Discipline
- Ensure order and decorum within the Senate chamber and its precincts
- Enforce rules relating to access and conduct in the Senate
- Remove unauthorised persons or maintain compliance with Senate procedures when necessary
3. Security Functions
- Oversee security arrangements within the Senate precincts
- Coordinate with security agencies to ensure safety during sittings and official events
- Control entry to the Senate chamber and galleries
4. Administrative Support
- Assist the President of the Senate with administrative and operational matters
- Supervise support staff such as attendants and ushers
- Ensure readiness of the chamber before sittings (seating, documents, etc.)
5. Summons and Communication
- Deliver messages or summons from the Senate to the National Assembly when required
- Carry out formal communications on behalf of the Senate
6. Custody of Senate Property
- Safeguard ceremonial items, including the Black Rod
- Ensure proper care and management of Senate facilities and equipment in the chamber
Qualifications
- Advanced skills in Security Management
- Diploma in any of the following fields:
- Public Administration
- Political Science
- Law
- Office Administration
- Or related field
- Strong understanding of parliamentary procedures and protocol
- Leadership and supervisory skills
- High level of discipline, integrity, and professionalism
- Good communication and coordination skills
- Experience in security, public administration, or parliamentary service is an advantage
