Appointment of two Justices of Appeal to the Court of Appeal

The Court of Appeal of Seychelles seeks to appoint two non-resident Justices of Appeal, or being resident, is not a full-time member of the Seychelles Court of Appeal or not an ex-officio member. The appointed Justices will be requested to attend sittings in the Court of Appeal sessions of August and December 2023 and any other sessions thereafter.

Applications are invited from persons who are qualified under Article 122 of the Constitution of Seychelles. 

The persons must be suitably qualified in law and can effectively, competently and impartially discharge the functions of the office of Justices of Appeal under the Constitution of the Republic of Seychelles. 

The appointees should preferably hold or have held high judicial office in the Apex Court in a Commonwealth country as appellate Judges for at least seven years, preferably with experience in dealing with civil and constitutional cases. 

The Court of Appeal has jurisdiction to hear and determine appeals from a judgement, direction, decision, declaration, decree, writ or order of the Supreme Court and such other appellate jurisdiction as may be conferred upon the Court of Appeal by this Constitution and by or under an Act. 

The Court sessions are usually for three and a half weeks. The fees payable to the Justices of Appeal, when they attend a session is set out in Section 3(2) of the Judiciary(Amendment) Act 17 of 2022 read with step 1 of salary band 17 specified in the Public Service Salary Act 25 of 2013. It is SCR 107,304 (Seychelles Rupees one hundred and seven thousand three hundred and four). This fee shall, on completion of each 12-month period served be progressed to the next step in accordance with that salary band. 

The Seychelles Judiciary will be responsible for the airline tickets as well as accommodation on full board basis and transport to non-resident Justices whilst in Seychelles. 

The attention of applicants is drawn to the “Constitutional Appointments Authority Rules on the “Selection and Appointment of Judicial Officers” and Schedule 2, which can be viewed on the Authority’s website.

Schedule 2 of the CAA Rules duly filled including a recent curriculum vitae , passport-size photo and, legal qualifications should reach the office of the Chairman of the Constitutional Appointments on or before 30 June 2023.
