Analytst II – Biorefinery ( P11 )

Sappi Technology Centre requires to fill two Analyst II – Biorefinery vacancies, the successful candidates will provide analytical support in the sugar and lignin platforms. They will perform chemical analyses and deliver accurate testing by following predefined work procedures in the laboratory for product quality control, research or product development purposes. The big focus as an Analyst II is on data generation in support of projects.

The main responsibilities of this job are:

  • Plan, coordinate and execute experiments and chemical analyses based on a daily and weekly laboratory schedule as per established test procedures, work instructions and prescribed experimental conditions.
  • Record all experiment results, trials and investigations in the prescribed format on log sheets and in notebooks.
  • Perform daily quality checks on a sample of the work performed by junior staff and guide the improvement of analyses and the logging of results.
  • Train junior / new employees on the chemical safety data sheets and check sample of work performed.
  • Conduct daily inspection to ensure work area and laboratory equipment are clean and neat.
  • Monitor and maintain stock levels of consumables (consumables include gloves, glassware, paper towels, plastic bags etc.).
  • Perform internal calibration and validations of laboratory equipment such as HPLC, GC, spectrophotometers, pH meters, conductivity meters, dosimats, pipettes, dispensers, ovens, burettes, water-baths and balances and record in respective logbooks.
  • Use the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) as stated in the laboratory procedures for each type of experiment or test.
  • Dispose of waste according to the correct procedures in designated bins.
  • Participate in departmental safety meetings and actively participate in internal audits.
  • Ensure all information is correctly documented and no rework on experiments is conducted to keep an accurate database of records.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science
  • 2-years’ relevant experience
  • Experience working in a biorefinery laboratory would be advantageous
