About the
Africa Digital and Communications Specialist

The Africa Digital and Communications Specialist is someone with demonstrated experience in developing, planning, implementing, and coordinating multi-platform digital and communications campaigns to get results, including innovative use of online tools and strategies. Someone who is well-organized, able to retain information and someone who can help the team with some administration tasks. Most importantly, we’re looking for a visionary person who knows how to inspire and innovate while dealing with healthy constraints

This role will sit within the 350Africa.org Team and will report directly to the Africa Digital Campaign Manager.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Digital Support

  • Implement social media plans for events, days of actions and campaigns;
  • Write email blasts, blog posts, social media updates
  • Regularly post and facilitate online conversations in social media that helps the organizations’ social media fans, friends and followers transition from being an audience to a campaign stakeholder.
  • Coordinate and implement a variety of web and design projects
  • Implement and monitor digital strategy/digital organising strategy to support regional campaigns
  • Monitor national petitions created and managed by volunteers and/or partners on 350 campaigns platform, and support them to increase sign-on and implement strategic deliveries.
  • Monitoring, supporting, training and managing activities on our AfrikaVuka platform to ensure that these communities are thriving both online and offline
  • Coordinate live coverage and report back of campaign events
  • Manage campaign websites, and update 350Africa websites with relevant information about Africa campaigns.
  • Update internal 350 channels with information about climate activism, current events, and climate campaigns in Africa.

Communications Support

  • Feed national, regional campaign stories into global communications and narrative
  • Draft press releases, media statements, articles such as opinion pieces with the support from the comms manager.
  • Coordinate photographers and videographers to produce high-quality multimedia for campaigns
  • Support rapid-response communications work in response to climate impacts and campaign developments across Africa and linking this to media outputs.
  • Help expand existing contact databases by tracking media hits and collecting press and regional communications consultants’ contact information.
  • Coordinate responses to traditional media requests from African journalists
  • Help track and measure communications deliverables in Africa

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Understand 350.org’s history, campaigns, and theory of social change, and keep current with basic climate science and policy. From time to time, use this knowledge to represent 350.org’s perspective in varied public venues based on geographic location and areas of expertise.
  • From time to time, contribute work towards 350.org’s overall mission that is outside of standard responsibilities and instead relies solely on geographic location or work capacity.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 3 years of experience in digital advocacy, media or campaign work.
  • Fluent written and spoken French and English.
  • Strong knowledge of various online campaign strategies and tactics. Ability to clearly articulate and operationalize campaign strategies and plans. Ability to compile a campaign baseline, monitor progress and evaluate the effectiveness of online campaign activities.
  • Strong online storytelling skills, including creating content that appeals to multiple target audiences. Ability to expand and grow 350’s audience in Africa.
  • Must embrace the principles of workplace justice, diversity and inclusion and apply them to day-to-day work. Must believe and embrace 350.org’s vision, mission and progressive values.
  • Organised, detail oriented and accurate. Able to create work plans and anticipate deadlines. Be comfortable juggling multiple priorities with competing deadlines.

Desired (but not required) skills and experiences

  • Previous experience in climate change or environmental role.
  • Previous experience doing administration work.
  • Previous experience developing media and communications outputs
  • Interest and passion for climate justice, racial justice, women’s rights, LGBTQIA rights, human rights and other social justice issues.
  • Familiarity with the digital tools used by 350.org (ActionKit, Action Network, NewMode, ControlShiftLabs, WordPress, Slack, Salesforce, SurveyMonkey).
  • Experience working in a multilingual context, especially with managing a multilingual digital presence.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others.
