The Africa Disability Alliance (ADA), former Secretariat of the African Decade of Persons with Disability (SADPD), is a disability-led technical agency that works on and utilises a broad range of policy tools in disability programming and implementation processes. The organisation has successfully used international relations and diplomacy to add value to policy formulation and implementation processes within the AU and its organs, Regional Economic Communities (RECs) and governments in Africa.

ADA seeks to appoint a Director of Communications and Public Relations, to be based in Pretoria.

Availability: As soon as possible

Report to: The CEO

Responsibilities:

  • Develop communication strategy, operational and implementation plans
  • Monitor the implementation of the strategy
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the communication Campaign Africa: Disability without Borders Campaign
  • Ensure that project, campaign and communication plans are developed for major events position
  • Position the work of the Africa Disability Alliance
  • Ensure internal / external communication is coordinated
  • Provide strategic direction to ensure effective management of projects
  • Manage the organisation relations with the media / stakeholders to enhance the organisation profile
  • Advocacy and development initiatives, with emphasis on promoting the rights of persons with disabilities
  • Develop and implement the advocacy campaign / media strategies
  • Develop publicity material
  • Develop training material / PowerPoint presentations and facilitating training on disability mainstreaming in policies and programmes

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Communication / Journalism / Public Relations / Language Studies or related
  • 10 years’ experience at a senior managerial level
  • Strong leadership and managerial qualities
  • Track record working with multi-stakeholder
  • Ability to communicate effectively and under stressful environment, understanding of government/AU organs communications environments
  • Knowledge and understanding of the African continent and regional inter-relations
  • Experience working in West African with Pan African Federations of the Disabled persons, African governments, AU organs and Institutions, donors NGOs
  • Strategic capability and leadership
  • Communication and interpersonal relations
  • Must be French speaking
  • Demonstrate an excellent level in French and English (written and spoken)
