Position Overview
The Accountant is responsible for managing financial records, reporting, and accounting operations of Mjuza Transport.
The role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with tax and regulatory requirements, monitoring of operational costs, and support for management decision-making related to fleet operations, fuel usage, maintenance expenses, and revenue collection.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial records and reports
- Manage daily accounting transactions and general ledger entries
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
- Monitor company cash flow and perform bank reconciliations
- Handle accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Verify cash collections from conductors, drivers, and ticketing systems
Fleet and Operational Cost Accounting
- Track fuel consumption and fuel expenses
- Monitor vehicle maintenance and repair costs
- Maintain records for spare parts purchases and inventory
- Analyse route profitability and operational efficiency
Payroll and Staff Payments
- Process salaries, overtime, and meal allowances
- Maintain payroll records and statutory deductions
- Ensure timely payment of employee benefits and taxes
Budgeting and Financial Analysis
- Assist management in preparing annual budgets
- Compare actual expenses against budget forecasts
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to improve profitability
- Prepare cost reports for routes, vehicles, and departments
Compliance and Audit
- Ensure compliance with tax laws, transport regulations, and accounting standards
- Prepare tax returns and statutory reports
- Coordinate internal and external audits
- Maintain proper filing of financial documents
Asset Management
- Maintain fixed asset registers for buses, equipment, and office assets
- Calculate depreciation for company vehicles and assets
- Monitor insurance and licensing payments for buses
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Professional accounting qualification is an advantage (e.g., ACCA, CIMA)
- Two (2) or more years of proven experience in accounting or finance, preferably in transport or logistics
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Understanding of payroll systems and tax regulations
- High level of integrity and attention to detail
