Accountant
Main Function of the Role
To manage and maintain accurate financial records and provide timely financial information, reporting, and analysis to support effective financial management and business decision-making.
Key Performance Areas
- Maintain the general ledger and accounting records.
- Prepare monthly management accounts and financial reports.
- Perform bank, balance sheet, debtors, creditors, and other account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
- Manage month-end and year-end accounting processes, including journals, accruals, prepayments, and depreciation.
- Monitor financial transactions, expenses, and internal financial controls.
- Support the annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Perform budget-versus-actual analysis and investigate material variances.
- Provide financial analysis and reporting to management.
- Assist with the preparation of audit schedules and supporting documentation.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, financial policies, internal controls, and statutory requirements.
- Maintain accurate and complete supporting documentation for all financial transactions.
- Identify accounting errors, control weaknesses, and unusual financial transactions and recommend corrective action.
Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- A BCom Accounting, BCom Finance, Diploma in Accounting, or equivalent recognised accounting qualification will be preferred.
- Professional accounting qualification or progress towards a professional qualification will be an advantage, including ACCA, CIMA, CA, or equivalent.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable accounting standards and financial reporting principles.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years’ relevant accounting experience in a similar role.
- At least 3 years’ practical experience in general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month-end accounting processes.
- Experience preparing monthly management accounts and financial reports.
- Experience performing bank and balance sheet reconciliations and investigating discrepancies.
- Experience with journals, accruals, prepayments, and depreciation.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and budget-versus-actual analysis.
- Experience supporting year-end accounting and external/internal audits.
- Experience using accounting software or an ERP system.
- Experience working with confidential financial information and maintaining financial controls.
Skills and Attributes
- Strong financial accounting and financial analysis skills.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, and financial reporting schedules.
- Strong accounting software/ERP skills.
- Strong knowledge of general ledger accounting and financial reporting.
- Strong reconciliation and month-end accounting skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
- Ability to investigate discrepancies and identify the underlying cause of financial variances.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prepare clear financial reports and explain financial information to management.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
