The BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition, presented by the California Academy of Sciences, is a globally celebrated platform that invites photographers to showcase the beauty and complexity of life on Earth. This competition focuses on capturing the essence of biodiversity, wildlife, and ecosystems through stunning visual storytelling. Designed to inspire awe and action, it aligns with the Academy’s mission to explore, explain, and sustain life, encouraging photographers to contribute to the conversation on environmental conservation and awareness.

With a reputation for excellence, the BigPicture competition is open to photographers of all skill levels, from seasoned professionals to passionate amateurs. It provides an unparalleled opportunity for participants to gain international recognition for their work, with submissions that span across seven distinct categories, including Landscapes, Aquatic Life, Terrestrial Wildlife, Winged Life, Human/Nature, Art of Nature, and Photo Stories. Each entry is carefully evaluated by an esteemed panel of judges, which includes renowned photographers and experts in the field of conservation photography. These judges assess entries for their technical quality, originality, artistic merit, and the impact of their environmental message.

The competition not only celebrates the artistry of photography but also emphasizes its role as a powerful medium for conservation. Entry fee: $25 for up to 10 single images; $15 for each 6–8 image Photo Story submission.

Eligibility

Open to all photographers worldwide.

Prize

The Grand Prize winner will receive $5,000 for the best overall image and be featured in the annual exhibit at the California Academy of Sciences. First-place winners in each of the seven categories will each receive $1,000 and have their images displayed in the exhibit. Up to six additional finalists per category will receive certificates of recognition.
