Call on: 1) Fresh Produce Farmers to Register on Farmers’ Registry & 2) Fresh Produce Buyers for Retail to Register on Buyers’ Registry

The Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC) as established by the LNDC Act is charged with a mandate to“initiate, promote and facilitate the development of manufacturing and processing industries, mining and commerce in a manner calculated to raise the level of income and employment in Lesotho.” As part of fulfilling this mandate, the LNDC has identified the development of national fresh produce market infrastructure as a key strategic intervention required in Lesotho’s agricultural sector. The national fresh produce market infrastructure entails both the physical and ‘soft’ infrastructure by way of actual participants in the system. As part of readying the support to ‘soft’ infrastructure, it has become imperative to establish a credible inventory of potential participants in the fresh produce value chain in Lesotho either as buyers or farmers supplying their agricultural produce to the fresh produce trading platform. These inventories/registries will serve as baseline data that will guide, inter alia, design of specific support interventions to enhance performance of each grouping in the fresh produce value chain for optimal utilization of the national fresh produce value chain components. Therefore, the LNDC issues the call targeting the following groups;

1. Farmers of fresh produce (e.g. fruits, vegetables, legumes, herbs, and other fresh produce) to register under the Fresh Produce Farmers’ Registry.

2. Buyers of fresh produce for retail (e.g. fruits, vegetables, legumes, herbs, and other fresh produce) to register under the Fresh Produce Buyers’ Registry.

Registration by farmers and buyers under the two registries represents an important milestone towards implementing both the Handling Facility and Market Centre as envisaged for 2020 financial year.
